My running journey had some humble beginnings, as with most adult-onset runners. In 2011 I was about to turn 39 years old and realized that I didn’t want to enter my 40s feeling as unhealthy as I did.  So I did what many others have done.  I downloaded MyFitnessPal and C25K.  I slowly began to change my eating habits and even started kind-of liking the running thing.  I ran my first 5k with my daughter in the Fall of 2011, felt like I was going to DIE and, of course, NEVER expected to run farther than 3.1 miles.

But, the miles kept inching up.  I ran my first half marathon early in 2013 and realized that I wanted to become a marathoner.  I trained for the 2013 Dallas Marathon, which was cancelled due to a freakish ice storm.  Trained again in 2014, ran Dallas with ITB injury, but finished.

I finally wised up and hired a coach in 2015.  My running took off and no more injuries!  I realized that I was decently good (in an upper-mid-pack kind of way) and had lots of fun setting new PRs almost every race.  After running Dallas Marathon 2015, the idea of qualifying for Boston started floating around in my head.  2016 was dedicated to knocking 30 minutes off my marathon time to qualify.  I ran Ragnar Trail in October 2016 and FELL IN LOVE.  The event confirmed what I already knew – my real home was on the trails and I couldn’t wait until I was able to make the transition.  But first, BQ.

I ran Houston Marathon in 2017, qualified for Boston with 8 minutes under in horribly hot and humid conditions that had runners down all over the course – one even passed away as a result.  After that, I ran my first ultra at Cowtown.  I FINALLY ran my first real trail race in May, 2017.  The remainder of 2017 was a flurry of finding trail races that fit my schedule and exploring the trails in my area (which are FEW).  Even though I was set to run Boston 2018, I was DETERMINED to run my first 100 miler in 2017.  (Patience is NOT my virtue.)  I ran Brazos Bend 2017 and earned my first buckle.

After Brazos, I was back on the roads to train for Boston but I couldn’t wait to get back on the trails.  I was so impatient that when I snuck in a trail run on Spring Break, I fell and broke my radius.  Luckily, no surgery was needed and my ortho understood my need to run.  I was given a soft cast and told to train as normal!  Boston 2018 was a cold, wet, rainy race but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the experience.

Now, I’m just searching for new experiences and ways to push my boundaries out on the trails!

    Hi Jen!
    My name is Amy and I am in the middle of my C25K program right now. It is very motivational to know that you started in a similar place and now run marathons. That is my long term goal. It seems a little far fetched to me now, as I am in the exhausted after 30 minutes place, but you and your story are motivating me to keep pushing.

      Thank you!! Keep at it! When I started 4 years ago, I would collapse on the couch after those first workouts and would be so tired I could do nothing the rest of the evening. You will get stronger!!
